Beyond the Line: The Path for Peace

About the Exhibition

The Demilitarized Zone stretches across the Korean Peninsula midsection. The DMZ is geographically close to Seoul, about an hour’s drive, but remains an off-limits, inaccessible land for South Koreans.

The DMZ is both a dividing line and a scar left by the Korean War, while internationally it remains the world’s last Cold War vestige. That particular era of superpower rivalry has been over for decades, yet the DMZ on the Korean Peninsula continues to embody the unresolved tensions and historical legacies left in its wake.

This exhibition seeks to explore new possibilities for that strip of land. We confront the contradictions that have been shaped by division while striving to reaffirm that the DMZ has at times served as a venue for exchanges among individuals and between the two Koreas. We hope that the DMZ will evolve from a symbol of division into a gateway to a future beyond borders.

Section I: Where Contradictions Intersect

The DMZ was established following the Korean War as a buffer to prevent further armed conflict. Although it is called “demilitarized,” armed soldiers maintain round-the-clock vigilance, and countless landmines are buried within and around its boundaries. Persistent military tensions have led both sides to strengthen their observation posts and position them increasingly close to the perimeter. Multiple rows of barbed-wire fencing have also been installed along both sides.

Human access to the Zone remains largely restricted, yet this absence has paradoxically allowed ecosystems to flourish and new life to emerge. In this landscape shaped by the coexistence of opposing forces, the DMZ confronts us with the paradoxical intersection of destruction and regeneration.

Section II: Where Borders Dissolve

Although the DMZ is now seen as an impassable border, this region had long been a shared living environment for both people and nature before division. The line bisecting the Korean Peninsula has gradually become a familiar boundary, yet the history of division dates back only a few decades.

Memories of the once-thriving communities that inhabited this land endure in those who still await the day they may return to their hometown. During periods of NorthSouth détente, people have crossed these forbidden boundaries in search of paths toward peace, helping and cooperating with one another. We hope to reconnect severed routes and open new possibilities for exchange at this gateway to a wider world.

On the Path for Peace

The DMZ remains the world’s last Cold War legacy. Yet dialogue and exchange across the invisible ideological lines and other boundaries have become small but meaningful steps toward peaceful coexistence and the true end of the Cold War. At times, we have confronted the barriers that divide us. Still, with each renewed attempt at connection, this land gradually begins to change. Though often unseen, these currents and movementsour shared aspiration for peace and coexistencewill slowly widen the pathways between North and South.
