The negotiation process started there in 1951 and went on for about two years; on July 27th, 1953, the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed. Afterwards, the United Nations Command and the Korean People's Army‧Chinese People's Volunteers designated the place as a Joint Security Area(JSA) for the implementation of the Agreement. The Military Demarcation Line that goes across the Korean Peninsula divides the land, buildings, and even the conference room table in Panmunjom into South and North. The tension and hostility between the two Koreas is tangible there as well. However, in spite of this, South and North Korea have met more often in Panmunjom than in any other place. Since 1971, when the frst inter-Korean talk after the Korean War was held, up to the present(July 2018), 371 out of 667 talks have been held in Panmunjom. Having attracted the world’s attention with the Korean War truce talks, Panmunjom is again under the spotlight due to the inter-Korean summit held in April and May 2018. Featuring the holdings of the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History, this photo exhibition was planned to show major events from when Panmunjom was frst established to the recent inter-Korean summit. Following the history of Panmunjom, which has seen both confict and dialogue, division and peace, we look forward to dreaming of a new era.
