Jeju Island is an international tourist destination, with 15 million annual visitors. Recently, more than 15,000 people each year are moving to Jeju to enjoy the beautiful scenery and pleasant lifestyle. However, beyond such beauty lies the pain of the people of Jeju. It is said that most natives of Jeju are directly or indirectly related to the Jeju 4·3 Incident. The Jeju 4·3 Incident remains a painful wound in the hearts of the people of Jeju, and traces of that wound can be found all around the island. Many places were sites of massacre or where villagers were victimized at the time of the incident.

Historic sites related to the Jeju 4·3 Incident include “lost villages” where the villages were burnt to ruins and never restored as villagers le , 4·3 fortress sites, hiding places, massacre sites, concentration camps, military posts, mass graves of victims, and monuments. This photo exhibition was planned in hope that all would sympathize with the painful wound behind the seemingly beautiful and peaceful island of Jeju and once again remember the significance of the universal value of human rights.
