Hangeul (the Korean alphabet) was created in 1443 and proclaimed on October 9 (September 10 of the lunar calendar) in 1446 after a trial period of three years. Initially, the Korean Language Research Society celebrated the anniversary of Hangeul by assuming that Hangeul was proclaimed on the last day (the 29th) of the ninth month of the lunar calendar based on Sejongsillok (Annals of King Sejong). However, the discovery of an original copy of Hunminjeongeum Haerye (Explanations and Examples of the Proper Sounds for the Instruction of the People) revealed that Hangeul was proclaimed during the first 10 days of the ninth month. The last day of these 10 days, September 10, 1446 of the lunar calendar, is equivalent to October 9, 1446 of the Julian calendar. In 1946, after liberation from Japanese colonial rule, the government designated October 9th as Hangeul Proclamation Day, and it happened that the first Hangeul Proclamation Day was the 500th anniversary of the proclamation of Hangeul.
The Post Office issued 500,000 commemorative stamps celebrating the 500th anniversary of the promulgation of Hangeul. This is one of the commemorative stamps, and its face value is 50 jeon (the monetary unit of the time). The stamp features the words “Commemorative Stamp Celebrating the 500th Anniversary of Hangeul” in the upper area, and its design shows the consonants and vowels of Hangeul on a white paper scroll surrounded by leaves and flowers.
