In 1981, the Chun Tae-il Memorial Hall Establishment Committee was launched to honor the spirit of Chun Tae-il, a worker at a clothing manufacturer in the Cheonggyecheon area who burnt himself to death in 1970, demanding observance of the Labor Standards Act. The committee changed its name to the “Chun Tae-il Memorial Society” in 1984 and launched various projects to support labor organizations, including education programs for laborers and establishment of democratic labor unions. In addition, the organization set up the Chun Tae-il Labor Award, which was given annually to an individual or organization that set an example in conducting the labor movement, from 1988. It also holds the Chun Tae-il Literary Award ceremony each year for literary works, including poetry, novels, essays and journals, concerning the lives of laborers.
The booklet consists of 10 pages, including the cover. The front cover features a photo of Martyr Chun Tae-il in the background, with a text reading “Period to succeed and practice the spirit of Martyr Chun Tae-il” and the period. The booklet gives an introduction to the labor activist on pages 2 and 3 titled “Who is Chun Tae-il?” The following pages provide information on the publication event of Chun’s diary, and the 1st Chun Tae-il Labor Award and the 1st Chun Tae-il Literary Award ceremonies, followed by a brief introduction on the committee for the memorial service on the 18th anniversary of Martyr Chun’s death and the “Tribute Song for Chun Tae-il.” The memorial service was organized by the Cheonggye Clothing Labor Union and the Chun Tae-il Memorial Society.
